Bayview Opera House Wins Preservation Design Award

The California Preservation Foundation has just announced the 2017 Design Awards and the Bayview Opera House project has been selected. Deborah was asked by the San Francisco Arts Commission to take a leadership role in planning the renovation and restoration project. In her role, Deborah assisted the City of San Francisco in hiring Tom Eliot Fisch as the architects for the project and Hood Design as the landscape architects. Knapp Architects assisted TEF with the project. Working with Judy Nemzoff of the SF Arts Commission, Deborah oversaw the design of the project and the Department of Public Works oversaw the construction. Special recognition goes to Judy Nemzoff who just recently retired but who for over a decade championed this project, raised money, and worked with the community to ensure its success. Also thanks to Tom DeCainy for his support along the way.

Assisting the Tibet Museum 2017

Early in 2017, Deborah was asked to provide advice to the Tibet Museum in Dharamsala India on behalf of the Tibetan Government in Exile. In January, Deborah traveled to Dharamsala and McLeod Ganj to collaborate with the team there and with colleagues from the University of Wyoming Museum. The planning involves expanding the museum into a new building being built adjacent to the Library and Archives and to the Parliament Building. The project entails expanding permanent and temporary exhibitions to add cultural preservation to the political story of the invasion and resulting exile to India and beyond.

Arkansas Arts Center Chooses Studio Gang

Today, the Selection Committee of the Arkansas Arts Center (AAC) selected Studio Gang to lead the renovation and expansion of the Arts Center, thus concluding the selection process organized and managed by Deborah Frieden. The Selection Committee was made up of City representatives, community members and board members. A technical review panel led by Deborah included the Dean of Architecture from UALR, chief curator for AAC, a local architect and local designer and AAC board member. Shortly, an RFQ for a local architectural firm will be released.

Bayview Opera House Opens to the Community

The Bayview Opera House opened after 14 years of planning, fundraising and construction. Congratulations to Tom De Caigny and Judy Nemzoff of the Art Commission. Special thanks to TEF Architects, particularly Paul Cooper, and Ruchira Nagiswan from Knapp Architects for their incredible support. Walter Hood’s landscape has helped transform the experience of the building and the programs at the Opera House. And finally, thanks to John King for his insightful article.

“Museum Architecture” by Deborah Frieden- Distinguished Speaker Series, Arkansas Arts Center, September 22, 2016

On September 22nd, 2016, Deborah will be the featured speaker at the Arkansas Arts Center’s Distinguished Speaker Series. Her lecture will focus on the history of museums and their architecture, track key trends and explore the evolution of the museum as influenced by facility design. Museums and their architecture have always reflected the socio-economic and political environment of their times and new museum designs are no different. The lecture will seek to highlight key designers and contextual influences while highlighting the globalization and technological advances of recent years.

Arkansas Art Center Seeks Design Architect

The Arkansas Art Center, a long-term client received public funding through a hotel tax earlier this year that will, along with a private capital campaign, underwrite much needed renovation and expansion of its facility in historic MacArthur Park, Little Rock. The AAC has issued an RFQ for Design Architect, with Deborah as the Selection Advisor.

Asian Art Museum

Deborah has partnered with mack5 to provide project management services for the Asian Art Museum’s Transformation Project, which includes updating its permanent collection and education areas and expanding to create a dedicated temporary exhibition pavilion with a roof terrace. Deborah is providing strategic project advising while mack5 is providing day-to-day project management services.

Global Network Forum Miami Nov. 17-19, 2015

Deborah has been selected to represent the Loeb Fellows along with Sally Young and Cathy Crenshaw at the international conference on leadership: The Global Networks Forum. The forum is “A path-breaking opportunity to share leadership strategies and innovations across premier international fellowship networks, sectors and borders hosted by Eisenhower Fellowships in collaboration with four leadership networks.” The leadership networks include the Ashoka, Eisenhower Fellowships, German Marshall Fund, Kellogg Fellows Leadership Alliance, and Harvard Loeb Fellowship. Collectively, these organizations decided they could make a significant contribution to women’s leadership and began to discuss ways to leverage their networks for this purpose. The fellowship programs are part of a wider Global Leadership Consortium launched in 2012. GLC member organizations convene to discuss common issues among the leadership networks, including best practices for engagement and communication among fellows. The GLC member organizations also confer on ways to spur discussion and collaboration among fellows to promote lifelong learning. Topics include:

Leadership Strategies for Equity and Inclusion: Transatlantic Perspectives
Building and Sustaining Healthy Societies
